The death toll from flash floods in northern Afghanistan surpassed 150, with thousands of houses destroyed or damaged in the worst-hit province of Baghlan. The Taliban’s Ministry of Interior Affairs confirmed on May 11 that at least 153 people were killed, with 138 injured across three provinces due to heavy rains triggering the floods.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban government, stated that “hundreds … have succumbed to these calamitous floods, while a substantial number have sustained injuries”.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 200 people were killed and thousands of homes were destroyed or damaged in Baghlan province alone.

The Taliban Ministry of Defense announced on May 11 that the air force had commenced evacuations and transferred over 100 injured individuals to military hospitals. However, specific details regarding the affected provinces were not disclosed.

Since mid-April, floods claimed around 100 lives in 10 provinces across Afghanistan, highlighting the widespread impact of the natural disaster.
