LIVERMORE, CA — Roya Afghan Cuisine, an Afghan restaurant on First Street in Livermore, announced that it is closing. Its last day will be Sunday.

“After 11 incredible years of serving our community, it is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of Roya Afghan Cuisine,” the owners wrote on their website and on a sign posted to the window. “As we embark on this bittersweet journey, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to every one of you who has walked through our doors, dined at our tables, and become a part of our extended family.”

Owner Abdul Yawari did not give a reason for closing, though he noted that he has opened another restaurant called Saffron Kitchen at 5940 College Avenue in Oakland. The restaurant is described as “Mediterranean-infused Afghan food.”

Roya opened in Walnut Creek in 1999, then moved to Livermore, according to the website. It offers lunch and dinner menus with items like beef, chicken, salmon and lamb kabob; rack of lamb; numerous vegetarian options like a sautéed pumpkin with yogurt and basmati rice and a vegetarian platter.

It is open 11:30-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. on weekdays except Monday, and 12-3 p.m. and then 5-9:30 p.m. on weekends. Call 925-447-0576 or go to royaafghancuisine.com for more information.
