At least 35 people have been killed and more than 250 injured after heavy rains hit the eastern parts of Afghanistan.

Torrential rains battered some districts of Nangarhar province on Monday afternoon. Taliban officials say casualties occurred after buildings and trees collapsed.
They add all the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals and that the downpours have damaged 400 houses and crops.

Taliban officials also say they have directed all relevant organizations to the emergency areas and are urging them to provide shelter, food and medicine to the affected.

The United Nations and other organizations say Afghanistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. In May, massive floods hit its northern provinces, killing at least 180 people and injuring over 240.
