The Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat Company (DABS) says it has held talks with Murad Artykov, head of international project from Turkmenistan.
The agenda included the implementation of a project at the Noorul Jihad substation in Herat province. According to information, the work is nearing completion. Technical issues remain to be resolved.
“Upon the completion of this project, the import of electricity from Turkmenistan to Herat is expected to increase, benefiting thousands of new customers in the province.”
The project will increase the capacity of Noorul Jihad from 70 megawatts to 110 megawatts.
Afghanistan imports more than 80% of its electricity from Central Asia and Iran. Until recently, almost half of its needs were supplied by Uzbekistan, which is now focusing on domestic consumption due to an industrial boom.
Turkmenistan used to supply 20% of Afghanistan’s electricity.
Experts told Daryo that in recent years Ashgabat has built the Turkmen-Afghan power lines Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat and Rabatkashan-Kalainau and to Mazar-e-Sharif at its own expense. All these directions fit into the concept of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) transmission line project.
