At least 10 people have died in western Afghanistan following a recent spell of heavy rains and flash floods, officials reported on Sunday.

Musa Ashhari, the provincial director of the disaster management authority, confirmed that seven people lost their lives in Herat province due to adverse weather conditions over the past few days. The rainstorms and flooding also claimed one life in neighboring Farah province and two lives in Ghor province, local officials added.

In April, similar storms and floods caused devastation across Afghanistan, leaving over 70 people dead and about 50 others injured. This latest round of heavy rain underscores the severe weather challenges Afghanistan continues to face, in part due to climate change, impacting communities and stretching the nation’s disaster management capabilities.
