AHMEDABAD: Authorities at Gujarat University (GU) have issued official notices to seven students from Afghanistan, instructing them to vacate hostel rooms. Five of these students have already complied with the directive, officials confirmed.
The move comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving Afghan students who engaged in an altercation with a local group over offering namaz in the open within the hostel premises.Following this incident, a delegation from the Afghan consulate visited the university after the ministry of external affairs (MEA) took up the issue.
“These students either have completed their courses or have formalities, such as obtaining transcripts or certificates, pending that do not require their presence on campus. University regulations prohibit students from using hostel facilities once their studies are concluded. All seven students fall into this category,” explained a senior GU official. “Four have finished their courses, and three have only administrative tasks remaining.”
GU currently hosts approximately 180 students from various countries. University sources revealed that rules are being strictly enforced in response to several instances where students attempt to prolong their stay after completing their coursework and other obligations.
Dr Nirja Gupta, the vice-chancellor of GU, stated that five of the seven students have already left the campus, while the remaining two are expected to comply with the regulations.
“We have notified the Afghan consulate regarding this matter. It was one of the issues discussed during their recent visit to the campus,” she confirmed.
