A high-ranking delegation from Turkmenistan arrived in Kabul to engage in talks with the delegation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Bakhtar News also reports that “the discussions primarily focus on trade and transit development between the two nations”.

According to Afghan figures, trade between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan totalled $481mn in 2023. Electricity, oil and gas are among Turkmenistan’s main exports, while Afghanistan mainly supplies marble, dried fruits, potatoes and soft drinks.

The two countries are working on a double taxation agreement.

Afghanistan has two checkpoints on its more than 800km border with Turkmenistan: Aqina in Farab and Turgundi in Herat. The Islamic Emirate plans to set up another in the Bala Murghab district of Badghis province.
